What Is Professional Teeth Whitening?
Professional teeth whitening lightens the natural shade of your own enamel using a peroxide gel, applied either in the clinic in a single appointment or at home in trays made to fit your teeth. Nothing is added to the tooth and nothing is drilled or filed away, which makes it the least invasive thing cosmetic dentistry has to offer.
What it cannot do is change anything that is not natural tooth. Crowns, veneers, bonding and white fillings stay exactly the shade they were made — so if you have work in the smile line, whitening will make it stand out rather than blend in. That is not a reason to avoid whitening; it is a reason to get the order right, because the usual sequence is to whiten first and re-match the work afterwards.
The other honest point is this. A good deal of what people call yellow teeth is stain sitting on the surface rather than colour inside the tooth. A scale and polish takes that off, and it is worth having one and then looking again before booking anything else. Some people find that they no longer want whitening at all — which is a perfectly good outcome of asking about it.
In the Clinic, or in Trays at Home

In the Clinic
One appointment, usually about an hour. The gums and lips are sealed off with a barrier, a strong gel goes on the front teeth, and it is changed two or three times while the shade is checked as it goes. The advantage is control — somebody is watching the gum line, and you walk out with the change already made. Many clinics shine a lamp on the gel and call it light-activated or laser whitening; the light adds far less than the marketing suggests, and the gel is doing the work.

Trays Made for Your Teeth
A scan or impression is taken and thin trays are made to your own arch, so the gel sits against the teeth and not the gums. You wear them at home, an hour a day or overnight, for about two weeks. It is slower and it asks you to keep at it, but the result tends to hold longer because the gel is in contact for far more total time — and the trays stay yours for topping up afterwards.
What Brings People In
Whitening is asked about more often than any other cosmetic treatment, and it is almost always a photograph that starts it. These are the reasons that come up.
- Stains from tea, coffee and tobaccoYears of tea, coffee, red wine, paan or smoking, sitting on the surface of the enamel and slowly soaking in.
- Teeth that have yellowed with ageEnamel thins over a lifetime and the darker dentine underneath begins to show through. Very common, and it responds well.
- One tooth darker than the restUsually a tooth knocked years ago, or one that has had a root canal. It needs a different method from the teeth beside it.

- A date in the diaryA wedding, a photograph, an interview. Worth starting a few weeks ahead rather than the week before, so the shade and any sensitivity have settled.
- Work that no longer matchesA crown or a front filling matched years ago that now reads darker or lighter than the teeth around it.
- Wanting a change with nothing cutThe appeal of whitening is that nothing is drilled and nothing is permanent. Stop, and the teeth simply drift back to where they were.
Options
What Kind of Discolouration Is It?
This decides how well whitening works far more than the method does, and it is the part most often skipped. The four below behave very differently.
1Surface staining
Tea, coffee, tobacco and paan, sitting on the outside of the enamel. It responds best of all — and a scale and polish alone removes a good deal of it, which is why a cleaning comes first and the shade is looked at again afterwards.
2Yellowing with age
Enamel thins and the dentine beneath shows through more strongly. This is the classic case for whitening: it lightens predictably and evenly, and the result looks like your own teeth on a better day.
3Grey or banded from the inside
Colour built into the tooth as it formed — tetracycline banding, or fluorosis. It responds slowly, partially and unevenly, and needs months of tray wear rather than one appointment. Anyone promising a quick result on these is overselling.
4One dark tooth
A tooth knocked years ago, or one that has had a root canal. Gel on the outside barely touches it, because the colour is coming from inside. The answer is whitening from within — sealed inside the tooth and changed over a few visits until it matches its neighbours.
How Does Teeth Whitening Work?
Before any gel goes near a tooth
An examination for decay, gum disease, exposed root surfaces and cracks — gel on any of those is what turns whitening from uncomfortable into memorable. Crowns, veneers and white fillings in the smile line are noted, and you are told plainly that they will not change. Your current shade is matched against a guide and photographed, which matters more than it sounds: the change happens gradually enough that people genuinely forget where they started. A cleaning is usually done first, and for some people that turns out to be the whole treatment.

Lightening the tooth
In the clinic, a barrier is placed over the gums, the gel goes on the teeth, and it is changed two or three times across about an hour with the shade checked between. At home, the trays are fitted and shown to you, with a small amount of gel per tooth — a great deal less than most people put in — worn for the time you were given, for about two weeks. In both cases the gel releases oxygen into the enamel and breaks apart the stain molecules held there. Nothing is scraped, drilled or removed from the tooth.

Sensitivity, and the first 48 hours
Sensitivity is normal and it is the part nobody warns you about: short sharp twinges, worst on the first day and usually gone within two or three. A sensitive toothpaste started a week beforehand, a desensitising gel in the tray, shorter sessions or a day's gap between them all help. For about 48 hours afterwards the enamel takes up colour more easily than usual, so what you drink in those two days matters more than what you drink for the rest of the month. The shade is checked again once everything has settled, because it rebounds slightly from wherever it finishes on the day.

Recovery
Keeping the Shade
Whitening is not permanent, and how long it lasts is decided almost entirely by the four things below.
- 1
The first 48 hours matter most
Straight after whitening the enamel picks up colour easily. Tea, coffee, red wine, cola, curry, beetroot and tobacco in those two days undo a real part of the work. After that, ordinary caution is enough.
- 2
Rinse rather than scrub
A mouthful of water after coffee or wine does more than brushing does — and brushing straight after anything acidic is worse than not brushing at all, because the enamel stays softened for about an hour. Wait.
- 3
Smoking is the shortest route back
Nothing re-stains teeth faster. If whitening is being done for a date, that is worth knowing beforehand rather than afterwards.
- 4
Top up rather than start again
With trays of your own, a single night every few months holds the shade indefinitely and uses very little gel. A whole course from the beginning is rarely what is actually needed.

What's the difference
Supervised Whitening vs Shop-Bought Kits
The shelf is full of things with whitening on the label, and most of them are not doing what the word suggests.
Whitening toothpastes, charcoal powders and most polishing kits contain no meaningful bleach at all. They work by abrasion — scrubbing stain off the surface. That does lift surface marks, and for a while the teeth look brighter. But abrasion does not stop politely at the stain: used hard and daily it wears enamel, and thinner enamel shows more of the yellow dentine underneath. It is entirely possible to scrub your way to teeth that are more yellow than when you started.
Strips and kits bought online may contain real peroxide, at a strength either too weak to do much or, from unregulated sellers, strong enough to burn a gum that nothing is protecting. What none of them can do is the part that matters: look at the tooth first. Gel on an untreated cavity, an exposed root or a cracked tooth is the reason whitening goes wrong, and no strip can tell whether any of those are there.
Supervised whitening is not simply a stronger version of the same thing. It is the version where somebody checks whether whitening is the right answer for your teeth at all — and occasionally tells you that it is not.
What Happens at Your First Whitening Consultation

- 2Shade recordedYour current shade matched against a guide and photographed, so the change can be measured honestly.
- 3What will not changeCrowns, veneers and white fillings in the smile line, pointed out before anything is started.
- 4MethodIn the clinic, trays at home, or both — chosen on your shade, your sensitivity and your timing.

Teeth Whitening Near You in Gajularamaram
If you have been searching for teeth whitening near you, the appointment worth booking is the one that begins with a look and a recorded shade rather than with the gel. Half the useful work is deciding whether the colour is on the tooth or in it, because only one of those lifts quickly.
Bring the photograph that started it, and ask what will not change. Any crown or front filling is the answer most people have not thought about, and it is far better heard before whitening than after.

FAQs
Frequently asked questions about teeth whitening
Still have a dental question?
Send us a message and our dental team will help.
Does teeth whitening damage enamel?
Not at the concentrations and contact times a dentist uses. The gel releases oxygen into the enamel and breaks the stain apart; it removes no tooth structure, and enamel takes minerals back from saliva afterwards. What does damage enamel is abrasion — daily scrubbing with charcoal or a gritty whitening paste — and strong unsupervised gel left sitting against gum.
How long does teeth whitening last?
Between one and three years for most people, and that range is mostly diet and smoking rather than the whitening itself. Trays of your own turn it into a shade you can hold indefinitely with a night every few months. Teeth do not snap back — they drift, slowly enough that you rarely notice until you see a photograph from the week it was done.
Will whitening change my crowns or fillings?
No, and it is the single most important thing to know beforehand. Ceramic and composite hold whatever shade they were made in. If a crown or a front filling matches your teeth now and your teeth get lighter, it will stop matching — so the usual order is to whiten first, wait a couple of weeks for the shade to settle, then replace the restoration to the new colour.
I have sensitive teeth — can I still whiten?
Usually yes, with adjustments: a sensitive toothpaste started a week before, a desensitising gel in the tray, shorter sessions, or gaps between them. What matters is that the sensitivity is looked at rather than worked around — if it is coming from an exposed root, a crack or decay, that is treated first.
I have just had my braces off. Can I whiten now?
Wait a few weeks. Enamel needs time to rehydrate after the brackets come off, and the shade often evens out on its own in that period. There is a second reason: if there are chalky white marks where the brackets sat, whitening can make them more obvious rather than less, because those marks lighten faster than the enamel around them. They are worth assessing before anything is started.
Is teeth whitening safe during pregnancy?
It is elective, so it is normally deferred — not because harm has been shown, but because there is no reason to take an unstudied risk for a cosmetic result. Cleaning and gum care carry on as normal throughout, and gum health matters more than usual in pregnancy. Whitening waits.
